Legal Ease of shooting a film with trademarks, logos, etc. visibile
Tuesday, December 7, 2010 in Film, Photography

Brand managers of companies are notoriously a nervous bunch. One, just one bad episode can mar a brand, for a little while, or forever. Remember ValuJet? That brand tanked after ValuJet Flight 592, which crashed in Florida. They did a very smart thing and bought a smaller airline and just took their name: AirTran Airways.

This article talks about the sometimes maddening legal issues that arise when you shoot a film where you have logos, trademarks, etc. For instance, when in an NBC episode of Heroes, they ram someone's hand down a sink disposal, and the logo of the disposal is shown. They sued NBC over that.

So while your little indie flick probably is "OK" and you don't have to worry too much, you sure do if you're going to send it to festivals, etc.

Great article. Enjoy.
